Dud's Tip #189

Cable Fairleads

Yes, I know that this 'tip' doubles as an advert for Permagrit, but no apologies as it is a very good product.

I have found a very effective way of using a Permagrit tungsten carbide round file. Pop it in the chuck of a power drill. You can cleanly open out a small hole by just plunging it in the hole whilst being driven, or by applying a side load a channel can be formed for the passage of a cable or similar.

I used it in the former mode to route the elevator trim cable outer through the fuselage and the tailplane spars.

I have just used it in the latter mode to make the rudder cable 'fairlead' blocks to the fuselage sides.

Dust flying off the half block.
Two half blocks adjacent to their final position.
Half blocks clamped to trap the cable outer and being weighted down to the fuselage side ply.
Finished article with its covering land fitted.
Overview to put the rest in context. It shows the rudder cable clamped in the position it will be in when attached to the rudder horn. Also evident is the scalloped area that terminates the retro fit stringers to the original flat fuselage side.
