Dud's Tip #247

Locating Firewall Slots

HB asked for tips so I gave him a horse but here is a real one. This tip is for a job that a lot of you won't come up against but the principle can be used time and again.

Again I apologise for stating the obvious for some of you, but this may help some folk and it costs nothing.

The photos show my firewall front ply skin being shaped. How do you get the 8 slots for the double shear engine mount brackets in the ply in the right place?

Before fitting the plates (that is a temporary bolt on the close up, worry not) tracing paper is taped to the firewall skeleton and the slot positions are accurately marked. The slots are cut through the ply (which at this stage is an oversize blank) erring on the small side. The ply panel is offered up and final adjustments made to the slots. When the ply panel is able to slip over the projecting plates and sit against the firewall, the perimeter of the firewall can be marked around and the final shape determined.
