Dud's Tip #303

Leading Edge Sheeting

Sometimes when attaching D box sheeting to a leading edge one understands the merit of an octopus.

Hands are flying everywhere as you try and locate the ply and panic sets in as the minutes tick by and the adhesive is on it's way to setting.

One aid in this process is to add one or two small wire locator dowels.

The ply sheet and rib/leading edge is drilled whilst the ply is accurately positioned in it's dry state, I.a. before the panic sets in.

I use 2mm model push rod offcuts so I drill through at 2mm, remove the ply and open out the hole in it to about 2.5mm (I assume that I am not going to be working to a closer tolerance that 0.5mm on a job like this!).After applying the adhesive the hole/s in the ply are slipped over the dowel/s and presto, one worry is out of the way as the luggage ratchet straps are tightened.

As previously mentioned I use Aerodux for D boxes so that I can paint the whole of the inside of the ply with the adhesive to seal it. For general working however I don't think one can beat the cleanliness and general convenience of use that comes from Aerolite (just to add my twopennyworth to the recent debate on adhesives).
