Mike Clark's Z-21

(former Mike Wood ship)

August 7, 2004

Hi Flitzerfans,

Here are some pictures of Mike Wood's Flitzer Z-21A, G-FLIZ, which he flew down from Lossiemouth in the north of Scotland, to the PFA Rally at Kemble in 7 hrs. (flight time), avoiding some very grim weather conditions and mountainous terrain en route. This aeroplane is the first with brakes and a tail wheel, conversion details and drawings for which are available from Mike, at Woodm3@hotmail.com .

Congratulations to Mike on a successful journey; his presence was welcomed and appreciated, and these pictures, courtesy of Dave Pounder, were taken at very rare moment when the aeroplane was not completely surrounded by enthusiastic admirers.

Group,

Latest picture of G-FLIZ, with a new, and more harmonious windshield - albeit still a little on the large size. Mike's been enjoying some good flying recently.

It is reported that G-FLIZ is being beautifully restored following its mishap and that progress is good.

This week saw a big step forward in the rebuild with the newly rebuilt VW engine running for the first time. It took a while to get it set up correctly, but the engine now starts at first swing and runs beautifully. The Leburg ignition system is a must for all VW engines.

I now intend to rig the uncovered wings to the fuselage to ensure that everything fits before covering and painting them.

One problem that I have at the moment, though, is with the oil pressure sender. The 2 1/4"Westach dual oil pressure/ temperature gauge does not register pressure. There is definitely oil presuure as I have checked this by other means. The sender appears to be at fault. It has Mediamate stamped on it but that is about all I can read. According to the Westach website I need a sender 387-100KV, but they are over £200!! Any ideas? I don't have panel space for a separate pressure gauge.

I've just posted some photos of the current state of progress. My inspector has just given it the once over prior to covering, so I can now get cracking with that. I want to get the covering and painting done before the winter comes, so there is some pressure on me. Just need more time (flat out at work with 95 hours flying in 28 days!)

Mike - Looks wonderful! The brakes and landing gear are a great improvement, and it looks so much better with spokes instead of wheel disks!

The Permit to test fly G-FLIZ arrived yesterday so I'm all set to go. Just waiting for the strip to dry out now after the snow melted and continuous heavy rain overnight. I spent the morning doing engine runs and taxying, and then spent the next hour cleaning the mud off the aircraft. I've posted a couple of photos that I took in today's sunshine.

Just to bring the forum back on topic again, I now have a full Permit from the LAA for G-FLIZ. My thanks to everyone who helped in different ways, especially Ian Wasey who has visited me on countless occasions and given me lots of useful advise. I thoroughly enjoyed the rebuild and will now experience the pleasure of learning how to fly it.

Look out for a blue and white biplane having fun in the sky!
