Terry White's Z-21A

(Formerly owned by Tony Morris)

September 10, 2004

Hi Flitzerfans,

Here is a recent photograph of 'YZ, which has now changed hands. Note the non-standard straight skid and slack bungees, which are things that will be rectified soon.

Interestingly the fuselage structural details are apparent beneath the plywood skinning. Note too that all cabane and undercarriage struts are fully-faired, and the wheel covers have been painted dark blue. Also the rudder checkerboard has been added to match the fin checkers, though this means the Flitzer logo has been overpainted.

Altogether a very pretty little aeroplane.

Perhaps we can look forward to some other pictures soon.

Regards,
Lynn

I flew the silver one for about 20 minutes on Friday. It goes very nicely, handles just like a Flitzer!

I’m going to do some cosmetic work on it for the new owner, Terry White, over the next couple of weeks then bring it to the Rally as well as my own. We should have all five there!

Splashed a bit of paint on 'YZ to get rid of that gastly checkerboard fin and rudder.

The detail on the forward fuselage side is a Liverbird. The Liverbirds are two statues of mythical birds that adorn the top of the Liver Building in Liverpool. Liverpool has adopted these birds as a sort of city emblem. They were designed by a German who made his home in England called Carl Bernard Bartels in 1911, when the building was built. The new owner of 'YZ, Terry White is a Liverpudlian (a scouser) and so asked for the emblem of his city on the nose. I think it looks quite good.

Carl was a bit of a famous sculptor in Liverpool and indeed the uk. When the Great War broke out, Carl was arrested because he was a German citizen and imprisoned on the Isle of Man. The City of Liverpool removed all reference to his achievements and at the end of the war, despite having a wife in London, he was sent back to Germany. A bit rough.

Underneath the Liverbird on 'YZ, written in German is "you’ll never walk alone", some football thing I think.

Group,

Rupert has done a fine job in restoring G-BYYZ to full health. This aeroplane has been stored for quite some time but Rupert says it flies beautifully. It has a slightly more pugnacious jowl than other Flitzers when seen from this angle. Compare with the prototype's cowling in this shot by Rupert, who filmed it when twisting around in G-ERIW's cockpit when leading the Rotte back from Old Warden.

'YYZ lacks the cockpit door common to other Flitzers.

It is reported that G-FLIZ is being beautifully restored following its mishap and that progress is good.

Group,

Another picture from Rupert. The lack of a door is apparent. Leaving the door off is not a good idea as people then tend to sit on the decking aft of the cockpit which is not stressed for that weight.

Otherwise this aeroplane is a good example of a standard Z-21A.

Group,

'YZ being crated for relocation, seen in Rupert's hangar.
