Hi Group,

Despite the lousy weather and neither Mike Wood or myself getting there, Kemble was a terrific and completely hilarious weekend, with the downloaded head and shoulders of Gerard, complete with Pickelhaube and Iron Cross, getting up to all sorts of reportable mischief on the airfield, although Thies and John forgot to take him to the motorcycle club where Thies 'pulled', wearing his WW1 officer's outfit. I am attaching a picture with another email to set the general scene, pictures of Gerard by later postings.

Rupert won hands down the best PFA awards, as I thought he might, with the 'Concours d'Elegance', naturally, as well as 'Best Plans-Built Aeroplane', and I gave him the Flitzer-Adler for 'die Besondere Leistung' (Special Merit) and the same plaque as Mike Wood's 'Most Determined Flitzer Flight to Kemble, 2004', except his read 'The Shortest Flitzer Flight....Rupert Wasey, 2005' (some ten minutes - from Calcot)! Rupert also got the 'best fly-by award' in the form of Barry Tempest's presentation of a glass Ferrari Testarossa paperweight, for looking good, fast, and making a super sound! Five awards, if you count the 'spoof' on distance.

John T. (Baldamus) won the Stieff Teddy Bear for his work on the Z-1 prototype, which he could use as a strut mascot in WW1 fashion.

The interest and enthusiam for the Flitzer was overwhelming and about many firm Z-2 project decisions were made (two seater). Even FD said he was going to visit me to discuss what was formally going to happen with the Z-Types, and he particularly liked the drawings of the Cleveland 200 monoplane and both he and JT seemed to think that ERW steel was perfectly OK for the fuselage which makes the project so much cheaper, compared to box-section 4130. Box-section ERW has many advantages when cutting simple angles for weldments. This is for the Mini-Bendix and Thompson Trophy event sport air racing re-enactions. It turns out he is intending to be doing something similar with the three or four Cosmic Winds now being restored.

Best wishes,

Lynn

Thies and Hartmuth
