December 30, 2005 - Stummel wing tips

Group,

Here's Vic's latest pictures showing the last rib on the Stummel Type S wing panel replaced by a 3/8" marine ply rib with generous lightening holes, which will allow the passage of the dragwires.

The previous rib required a too severe angle-change at the mainspar to the tip bow. The rear spar is unaffected, as the new rib does not rigidy follow the USA 35B section at this point, nor is this necessary, as there is little lift being generated here in any case.

I have also recommended this change to Emmanuel, for his Type S wing. The result will be a seamless flow of the wing thickness-taper into the single radius tip. On reflection it seems likely that an elliptical tip would have eliminated the problem, created by the proximity of the forward spar to the leading edge. The elliptical SK26 tips that Vic made and fitted to that prototype presented no difficulties whatsoever. The nose riblet is yet to be added in these views.

The 'simple' rounded tips on the Types S & R were a solution reducing roll-damping from the old square tip of the Z-21, to maximise the effect of the four Stummel ailerons, to reduce the possibility of adverse wing-twist with maximum deflection of the control surfaces at speed (VMO to be determined), and to reduce induced drag to some extent, assisted by the reduction in wing thickness/chord outboard.

The mass-balancing will also allow a higher VD, if necessary.

The final effect will be a testimony to Vic's perseverence and determination to create a beautiful aeroplane, as near as possible both to the designer's and the builder's vision of how it should look.

Group,

Here's Vic Long's new spar shapes and the final 3/8" thick marine ply tip rib shape, for the thickness taper-curve on the Stummeflitzer Z-1S lower wing tips, featuring the single-radius tip bow.

Cheers,

March 5, 2006 - Wing Offerings - The Cold Way

My helpers kept complaining of cold and disappearing in for tea and chocolate biscuits! As for completion, I think spring of '07 is quite realistic.

July 11, 2006 - Stummel Wing Tips

Group,

Latest from Vic Long. The four wings for the UK prototype Z-1S nearly completed! Vic comments that they are a 'nice shape'. I have to agree with him there! There is something of the Nieuport 28 about the upper pair, although they carry ailerons where the Nie. 28 didn't. I think that the Z-1 will be its own unique self at the end of the day. Can't wait to see it all erected.

July 31, 2006 - Cabane

Group,

Here with a photograph taken today of Vic Long's cabane weldment sitting in position on his Stummelflitzer Z-1S fuselage. Note his widened longerons in the tank bay which will carry an 11 Imp. gallon capacity tank.

It's always good to see such progress, but the delay with the PFA in not providing build books and project numbers for the later types is very irksome and worrying for builders, these not having been forthcoming for the Types Z-1 S, Z-1R nor Z-3, despite the promises.

June 11, 2007 - Z1-S Stummelflitzer Construction Pictures

Group,

Here are the latest pictures from Vic Long's Norfolk workshop.

The raked cabane, high stagger, reduced wing gap and the high spine of the headrest all contrive to make the Z-1S unique. The 15 degree-angled aileron slave rod-ends are very Art Deco and reflect the curved hinge-arms to some extent. These were necessary to provide slave strut travel clearance at the lower spar edge

Vic is barrelling along at the moment with only the interplane struts and some ply skinning to finish to complete the wooden structure. This aeroplane should be phenomenal with the planned 95 hp. installed. Note the tiny amount of dihedral on the four-aileron Stummels.

June 15, 2007 - Z1-S Stummelflitzer Construction Pictures

Group,

Here are Vic Long's Stummelflitzer Z-1S prototype ailerons rigged and functioning with the 15 degree offset strut-end clearance fitting on the lower end.

The slave-strut tube is 16 SWG 1" diameter and is very robust, partly to provide a degree of mass-balancing ahead of fulcrum, but also to ensure it didn't bend! It will be faired with balsa wood to reduce its drag to 1/6 of that created by a round-section tube. Underslung lead balances with adjustable spades will also be fitted as well as aileron-TE anti-buzz wires as Vic notes.

This is really great progress and the first of the four-aileron Flitzers to have the aileron control system fully functioning. The 100 degree roll-rate of the basic two-aileron machine with its square tips will be overshadowed by the roll-rate that this dedicated aerobatic variant will exhibit with its shorter span, its deeper spars and anti-roll-damping, rounded wingtips.

Flitzer Los!

December 15, 2007 - Battery Compartment

Group,

This is the first picture of the battery platform and stiffening web for a Stummelflitzer Z-1S, Z-1R, Meteor Speedwing etc. Note the built-up ventral floor-stiffening strake to match the longeron doubler-height aft of the seat back. This is how I originally envisaged it would look but I'd though that the stiffening web might interfere with accessing the battery via the inspection panel in the seat back itself. With the projected side-access port this is no problem and there is no need for the additional 3/8" dia. tube supports which I posted recently.

This platform may not be necessary for balance in all cases but it is helpful as an option. This work is by Vic Long whose Z-1S is very nearly completed structurally. He's also fabricated the engine mount for the 100 hp. UL 260i with another for sacrifical testing.

Great work, Vic!
